What Is Chronic Pain?

Chronic pain is pain that lasts weeks to years, but typically longer than six months. Chronic pain is not necessarily linked to a specific injury or illness, and it can be present even after an injury or illness is healed.

Chronic pain syndrome is often associated with emotional effects such as depression, anxiety, or habits or addictions that arise as a way to cope with the pain. People living with chronic pain often try many different avenues to solve their constant pain, which can be especially exhausting.

You Are Not Alone

Chronic pain is very common, with more than 10% of the worldwide population dealing with chronic pain at any given time, with these figures being closer to 20-25% of the population in certain regions.

Men and women, and people of all cultures and demographic backgrounds can experience chronic pain, but chronic pain tends to be more prevalent in women and the elderly. Chronic pain is not perfectly related to physical injury or illness.

What Can I Do About It? – Treatment for Chronic Pain

Traditional treatment for chronic pain most often includes medication, acupuncture, cognitive behavioral therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, traditional treatment for chronic pain is not nearly as effective as we’d wish it to be.

Thankfully, there are newer, less traditional approaches that are incredibly effective. The No-Willpower Approach that I outline in my bestselling books, The Little Book of Big Change: The No-Willpower Approach to Breaking Any Habit and Just a Thought: A No-Willpower Approach to End Self-Doubt and Make Peace with your Mind has helped people have a much easier experience of living with chronic pain.

The No-Willpower Approach is an insight-based approach that helps you see yourself and what chronic pain is in a radically new way.

Chronic Pain Is Changeable – Living with Chronic Pain

Although many people struggle with constant pain, your experience of it is very changeable. No matter how long or how often you’ve lived with chronic pain, there is enormous hope for having a very different experience.

Our experience of everything–including physical pain–is far more fluid and subjective than it may appear. Freedom comes from the inside-out, from seeing yourself, your thoughts and feelings, and what chronic pain is in a brand new way.

Chronic is changable

Hi, I’m Amy

I struggled with anxiety in many forms, from generalized anxiety to worry, to panic attacks and intrusive thoughts, for most of my life. I was told by many well-meaning professionals that I would likely struggle with this forever; that I could learn to cope, but that this habit might always come back when I was feeling stressed or overwhelmed.

Thankfully, nothing could be further from the truth today. I have been completely free of the physical and emotional effects of anxiety for many years with no effort or coping necessary. In that time, I’ve shared what helped me find freedom with people all over the world in my books, videos, online school, and my podcast, Changeable.

I’ve trained over 70 coaches to be experts in the no-willpower paradigm through my Change Coach Training Program. I’ve been a regularly featured expert on The Steve Harvey Show and Oprah.com, as well as in The Wall Street Journal and Self magazine.
