The separate self – a “me”, existing and operating independently from the rest of life – is illusory. This sense of a separate me is created in thought, incorporating memory, roles, and the interpretations of physical sensations.
These I-senses arise and are taken to be what you are, but none of these thoughts or interpretations actually prove the existence of a separate “me”. No such entity exists. What-you-are is not a set of fleeting impressions. What-you-are is closer to what’s aware of these fleeting impressions.
When attention is skillfully directed toward examining the sense of self, as well as toward awareness, the truth can be realized.
Please join us July 11-12, 2026, for a weekend online where we will explore how to direct attention in these ways with more depth, precision and consistency.
Who is this class for?
- Those who are already somewhat familiar with some form of self-inquiry. You don’t need to already have a regular practice, but you should have some familiarity with questioning who/what you are.
- Devoted students who are ready make some real progress in the dissolution of identity. You should have a strong desire for truth and liberation over comfort or interest in spiritual concepts.
- Serious practitioners who are willing and able to stay focused on a simple practice. You will be learning and honing a self-investigative process. You should have enough determination to turn attention toward awareness and the sense of self and return there as much as possible.
