EP200: How planning and playing out scenarios distract from feeling

Why is our attention so easily and frequently drawn to planning and thinking about the future?

Why does retreating into the world of thought feel so comfortable (even when thought is completely uncomfortable!)?

It’s a well-practiced habit, no doubt. It’s familiar there. But I think there is more to it than that.

In this episode, I suggest that most of our thinking about the future, planning, and playing out scenarios is an attempt to avoid emotion.

We’ll explore some ways of modulating attention that allow you to more easily see where it naturally goes.
