Birds Don’t Know How and Neither Do You

Birds don’t know how to build nests. They just build nests. Nests are built as this thing we label ‘bird’ instinctually does some stuff.

When it’s migration time, they don’t know how or when or where to fly. Wings are flapped and flying happens. Birds’ knowledge, their decisions, their ability, or their clarity have nothing to do with what happens. They aren’t even factors.

The same is true of all that is done through and by you.

Think you need to know how you’ll make it through the grief, confusion, or loneliness you’re feeling? Or how to support your child through their teen years or how to finally stop drinking?

You don’t need to know any of that. You can’t know how and you’ve never known how. No one ever has. Things just happen while a mind talks about how and why and how you are making it all happen.

Think you need to make a choice about which job to take? Whether to stay in or leave your relationship?

You don’t. You’ve never made a choice in your life. No one has. Things are seen and done alongside a commentary about how you’re making it all happen.

Life lives, and me-centered, how-centered, why-centered thought comes along for the ride.

Thought has no actual power. It simply accompanies life’s inevitable unfolding.

It’s insane how powerful thought feels when we don’t realize this.
